TFTC08: Secret Service by Mark Petry

Hello and welcome back to the First three chapters podcast.
This week I am happy to be investigating a new genre for the podcast with Mark Petry’s Secret Sevice.
One of the best things about doing this podcast is that it has made me go exploring genres outside my usual favourites and so I have been looking through the crime and thriller fiction for interesting new reads.
I think I first saw a link to Secret Service on Twitter and I knew straight away that it was the kind of book that I was looking for.
Mark has a strong narrative voice and the story has a tough, gritty feel.
There is somewhat more swearing and sexual references in this book than in most of my previous choices so don’t listen to this one in front of the children. But assuming you like your drama hard-boiled and action-packed then I think you’ll like this one.
I was almost tempted to try some American accents this time but you’ll be glad to hear that I refrained.

Mark’s parents emigrated to the US from Germany and he spent his summer holidays as a boy travelling back to Germany. Those long flights from Texas gave him plenty of time to nurture his imagination.
He graduated from the University of Texas and lives in Dallas with his wife Becky and ten year old daughter Kayla.
He has been a high flyer in the banking business for 20 years but wrote his first novel in the 2008 downturn.
His writing is inspired by stories, novels and movies with surprise endings. One of his favourite examples being ‘No way out’ an early Kevin Costner movie or the ending to William Diehl’s Primal Fear.
His first novel Class Dismissed about a psychology professor who supposedly killed his class during the final has a very surprising ending and was well received by Amazon customers.
Secret Service is the first in a series with Jack Shields. He modelled Jack after two of the greatest male protagonists in fiction, Don Draper from Mad Men and Jack Reacher from the Lee Child series.
It’s a thriller with a bit more sex. Even though it’s the first of a series Secret Service is a good stand alone read and will leave you waiting for the next book.

So if you’re ready, I’ll begin…

I do appreciate everybody who listens to the podcast and if you’d like to help me build it bigger and better then please leave a review or a rating on iTunes. The more reviews I get then the bigger the show gets.

So until next time, goodbye.

TFTC06: Chains of Prophecy by Jason P Crawford

Hello again,
I’ve been busy doing a lot of my own writing this week. I’m hoping to get my first book published on Amazon later this summer and I am currently loving the writing process.
Sometimes as an author it feels as though the words are just writing themselves and I just happen to own the fingers that will type them.
Writing isn’t always that easy though and I have had my share of days spent staring at a blank screen with no idea what to write. And for those days there are books to be read. So many great books by so many great authors. There is more to the world of literature than the New York Times Best Seller list.
That’s why I like to search all over for new authors who deserve to be read.
I met Jason Crawford on Twitter. He sent me a link to his book and suggested that I might like to read it. I loved it from the first few lines.
It’s a book set in our modern world in which angels and demons wage war for our souls and a simple accountant can become the saviour of us all.
If you like the TV series Supernatural then I’m sure you’ll love this…

TFTC05: Demon’s Night by Guido Henkel – A Jason Dark Supernatural Mystery

Welcome back to the first three chapters podcast. Last week I promised you something completely different and we certainly have that today. Although we’re going back in time to Victorian London again this time we’re exploring the supernatural world of Jason Dark – a supernatural investigator.

Guido Henkel dropped me a line on Facebook asking whether I’d be interested in a series of books he had written about supernatural mysteries in Victorian London. Frankly I can’t think of much I’d rather read about. I love this kind of story.

In this series Guido has gone to great lengths to recreate the feel of classic gothic-horror tales. It is a little like Mary Shelley decided to write a Sherlock Holmes novel.

I loved it from the start and I hope that you will too.

So get comfortable, turn down the gas lamp, ignore that eerie creak on the stair and I’ll begin…
